Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is found only in small amounts in certain foods. The body can also make vitamin D when exposed to sunshine (hence why vitamin D is often referred to as the sunshine vitamin). Vitamin D is considered an essential nutrient because the body needs to obtain it from food or with the assistance of sunshine which allows the body to manufacture vitamin D.*

Vitamin D is often found in supplements, and may be found in two forms: vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). The body produces vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) which is easily absorbed and used in many biological functions. The D2 version of vitamin D can not be used by the body, and must be converted to D3 for use. While the body is able to convert some D2 to be used for body functions, the body uses D3 much more effectively.*

Vitamin D is necessary for good health. It helps your body absorb calcium, one of the main building blocks for strong bones. 

Your body needs vitamin D for other functions too. Your muscles need it to move, and your nerves need it to carry messages between your brain and your body. Your immune system needs vitamin D to fight off invading bacteria and viruses.*
