If you live in Wisconsin and believe in your right to choose a natural healthcare practitioner, listen up! Your personal health freedoms are under attack, but there IS HOPE! Senate Bill 280, the Wisconsin Consumer Choice and Wellness Act, is pending legislation that will help protect your healthcare choices. There are wealthy and powerful organizations that want to stop this bill dead in its tracks. Here's some background and a snapshot of the bill and why it's critical for you to get involved.
We're so fortunate in Wisconsin to have many complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) providers - you might even be one of them. They serve as homeopaths, naturopaths, nutritionists, aroma therapists, etc., and they all provide a WANTED and needed service. But in Wisconsin, if you practice any sort of healing modality and are unlicensed, according to WI for Choice in Wellness, you "could be in technical violation of medical or other licensing laws, and, you may be at risk for unwarranted and unnecessary disciplinary action."
The answer to this problem is legislation that protects the rights of CAM providers and the rights of those seeking help from a natural practitioner. SB-280 does this by:
- allowing alternative practitioners to provide these complementary health services
- requiring practitioners to provide full disclosure about their practice to consumers
So what's the big deal? Why is this so important? Every year, 783,936 PEOPLE DIE, through iatrogenic medicine (of or relating to illness caused by medical examination or treatment.

According to a 174-page report just published, the number of people killed in 2009 across America by vitamins, minerals, amino acids or herbal supplements is exactly zero.Did you catch that? ZERO! Not one person died from natural medicine, yet the CAM community is in a constant battle with big medicine and big pharma to defend itself and defend your rights to practice these safe and effective healing modalities. If we don't do something now, your right to choose the healthcare practitioner of your choice will be a faint memory. Here's what you can do: 1) Go to www.wiwellness.org and sign the petition. Better yet, print off some pages and get your friends and family to sign it, too. You can also stop in Natural Healthy Concepts in Appleton and sign the petition 2) Contact Senators Moulton, Lasee, Galloway and Grothman and thank them for sponsoring the bill. 3) Next, contact your elected officials and ask them to support/co-sponsor the bill. If they don't hear from you they'll assume you don't care! 4) Don't go to bed tonight until you've done something to move this bill forward. Would it bother you if your right to see a nutritionist, or a naturopath were taken away? If you don't stand up for your health freedoms, who will? The eyes of the country will be watching what we do! Please help us support SB-280! AND, just as importantly, Support Representative Burton's H.R. 3380 to protect access to Dietary Supplements NOW! FDA's draft guidance for new dietary ingredients is looming and attempting to eliminate thousands of dietary supplements currently on the market. H.R.3380 will dramatically reduce the impact of FDA's plan to impose cost-prohibitive requirements on manufacturers of these life-saving products!
