Improving Your Absorb-Ability
BY ANDREAS M. PAPAS, PH.D.
With weight and overeating quickly becoming national concerns, the failure to absorb nutrients wouldn't seem to be an issue. However, malabsorption, which can result from, as well as lead to, a surprising number of different diseases, is proving just the opposite. Nutrient deficiencies top the list of problems resulting from malabsorption, especially deficiencies of the fat-soluble vitamins—like vitamin E, which are often harder to absorb than the water-soluble vitamins. Ironically, research shows that vitamin E, as well as other fatsoluble micronutrients, such as omega-3 fatty acids and minerals, including zinc, may be beneficial in conditions related to malabsorption. Making vitamin E water soluble is the solution Yasoo Heath Inc. offers to help increase absorption of vitamin E.
Role of Vitamin E
Everyone is familiar with vitamin E's positive role in health, particularly for the heart. It reduces the risk of heart attacks, slows the progression of atherosclerosis, inhibits platelet aggregation (a critical factor in strokes), prevents lethal arrhythmias, and reduces the inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (a risk factor for heart attacks). Vitamin E has known anti-inflammatory and antioxidant components, which slow the progression of cataracts, diabetes, immune function, rheumatoid arthritis, and neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. When combined with selenium, vitamin E is shown to reduce the risk of several types of cancers.
The subsequent progressive nutritional deficiencies caused by or resulting from a failure to absorb nutrients or specific sugars, fats, proteins, or vitamins can have significant health consequences; and severe vitamin E deficiency can lead to major neurological problems, such as walking difficulties, poor coordination, and even cognitive decline. Other problems include anemia and an impaired immune status.
A common condition that impedes the absorption efficiency of vitamin E and other nutrients is leaky gut syndrome. Conditions interrelated with leaky gut, such as candida overgrowth, parasites, toxic overload, alcohol use, and other triggering factors, not only damage the intestines, but also damage the mechanisms that facilitate nutrient transportation in a healthy gut. Plus, the inflammation associated with this and other more serious malabsorptive conditions, such as cholestasis, cystic fibrosis, hepatitis, AIDS, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn's and celiac disease, further reduces nutrient assimilation.
Another major cause of malabsorption is simply aging. Research shows that for many after age 40, enzyme and hydrochloric acid production significantly declines. Enzymes are critical for breaking down food and absorbing vitamins and minerals. Lipase, the fatdigesting enzyme, is especially critical for absorbing less assimilated nutrients, such as vitamins E and A.
However, by improving vitamin E's absorbability, the body can start using its benefits. It is important to know that vitamin E is actually not a single vitamin, but eight. So when choosing a vitamin E, be sure it contains all eight family members—alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocopherol and alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocotrienol. Taking a wellbalanced formula is important because research shows that excess levels of alphatocopherol impede the absorption of the gamma form, an anti-inflammatory compound. Gamma-tocopherol also neutralizes free radicals that are harmful to the body. These free radicals are a result of inflammatory processes and decreased antioxidant defenses in the digestive/intestinal tract, hence inhibiting the activity of cyclooxygenase-2 and the production of prostaglandin E2, two inflammatory compounds. In true catch-22 form, the very nutrient that can help reduce inflammation is poorly absorbed under the inflammatory conditions where it is needed.
A water-soluble source of vitamin E, such as Aqua-E, allows for improved absorption in patients with diseases of malabsorption that affect the liver, pancreas, or intestines. Aqua-E forms its own micelles—small spheres that have a water-loving exterior to allow the vitamin E to make contact with the lining of the gut—and contains all eight members of the vitamin E family. Aqua E is a unique, clinically tested, patented formulation of complete vitamin E. It is manufactured under cGMP, the same high quality standards used for pharmaceutical products. It is also suitable for children and adults who are unable to swallow vitamin E softgels and has a light, neutral flavor.
Though it may be hard to believe that amid an abundance of food and supplements, many develop vitamin E deficiencies, it is helpful to know there is a solution. Aqua-E supplies the complete vitamin E family of tocopherols plus tocotrienols in a patented water-soluble formulation that overcomes malabsorption.
